The Portland Metro Concert Band is an adult band comprised of musicians who enjoy playing music. Members range from college students to retired professionals.

In 1992, members of the Big Band at the Milwaukie Elks Lodge, finding themselves with a fine collection of concert band music, formed the Elks Concert Band with Jay Burchak and Fev Pratt as co-directors. A few years later, the band changed its name to the Portland Metro Concert Band to better reflect its membership and mission.

In 2009 Jack Mahoney replaced Mr. Pratt in the co-director’s spot, and upon his retirement in 2014 Dr. Roger Nickerson was chosen to succeed him. In 2016 Mr. Burchak retired from directing.

The band is now under the sole leadership of Dr. Roger Nickerson, who holds degrees in music education from Southern Oregon University, Lewis & Clark College, San Diego State University, and Reading University-UK/Columbia Pacific University. Having most recently taught in Oregon City schools, he is now Director of Music at Gresham United Methodist Church, as well as director of the East County Community Orchestra.

Numbering over 40 musicians, the Portland Metro Concert Band includes amateurs as well as musicians who play professionally. Members represent many fields of endeavor, including medicine, education, business, and computer programming. All the musicians, including the director, are volunteers. The band rehearses weekly for ten months of the year and performs three formal concerts at the Horner Performing Arts Center at David Douglas High School. In addition, the band participates in the Mid-Willamette Valley Band Festival and makes appearances at churches, retirement centers, and community events.
